That Old Cliche…
Do you sometimes feel that your life is just a series of cliches — that every situation, whether happy or sad, is a cliche unfolding before your eyes?
Take for instance a couple on the verge of a break-up. Dumper says to dumpee, “It’s not you, it’s me.” Dumper goes on to say that dumpee is everything a partner could ever want, and that anyone would be lucky to have dumpee in their lives.
What dumper actually means with this it’s not you, it’s me business is that; yes, it’s really not about YOU, it’s about ME. YOU don’t do anything to ME anymore, YOU don’t turn ME on anymore, YOU don’t make ME happy anymore; and ME no longer loves YOU.
So you see, it’s not about you, it’s about ME. Tsk. tsk.
Or how about, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” What this really means is that you may be lacking in the looks department but I ain’t gonna be the one to tell you that. Instead, let me make you feel better by saying that beauty depends on who’s looking; that physical attributes don’t really matter all that much when the inside is so beautiful, that your beauty on the inside outshines any physical attributes you may lack.
This one’s a classic: “I’m not ready for a relationship right now.” What this actually means is that I am not ready for a relationship right now or ever will be, with you. Again, this could also be translated to that it’s not you, it’s me crap. 😀
